Meeting More Teachers & Math Class with Raymond Jr.

The morning of 10/27 started with breakfast and a devotion, which I've enjoyed doing almost every day since. It has been an awesome way to prepare my mind for the day. I just finished reading Philippians and decided that it ties with Romans for my favorite book of the bible. Joseph sat with me at breakfast, and I told him about a mosquito bite that I had gotten on my pinky finger. "Did you sleep with one pinky out of of your net last night?" he asked 😂. I laughed and told him that I hadn't. I talked with Ezekiel for a little while during breakfast as well. Ezekiel is Dorcus' youngest, and he is the oldest of all the kiddos in the guesthouse (12). He is super mature and respectful and loves helping his mom cook.

I walked to the high school and met up with Simon and Raymond, who is the Deputy of Academic Studies. I also met Samil, who said they've been talking about me for weeks now 😂. I don't know how that's possible when I, myself, barely knew a few weeks ago that I would be here 😂. The teachers reiterated that they wanted me to teach a biology lesson, and I reiterated to them that I am happy to, but I have no type of background in teaching. It didn't matter to them haha. So, we decided that I would sit in on a few classes and then maybe teach one next week. Samil said that even though I am not a teacher, my background and teaching will help them build confidence. This confidence would come from knowing that science is universal and the concepts they are learning are the same in America.

I also met Rogers, the PE teacher, and told him that I would play volleyball with his class later. I bonded with one of with the biology and chemistry teachers, Rachel, over our love for organic chemistry haha.

As I walked back through the gate of the guest house compound, Moses told me that he wanted to wash my shoes later. I guess that he could tell that my brown shoes were not really supposed to be brown 😂. I didn't really mind that they were dirty, but I also didn't mind if he wanted to wash them. The funniest part was that when I went to lunch, Dorcus also told Rachel that she should wash my shoes 😂.

After lunch, I walked back to the high school and sat in on the staff devotion at 1:00pm. Raymond had me introduce myself in front of everyone, and they all welcomed me. "She is one of us," he told the staff. Whatever you say, Raymond 👍😂!

Following the devotion, I went up to Raymond Jr.'s math class as he taught about factorials, integration, factoring, and isolating variables. I actually really enjoyed it! I actually like math so much that I decided to minor in it in college. The pictures below are from that class. It's mostly s6's.

Above, Hasan is on the left, and Wilbur is on the right.

This is Raymond Jr.! He's awesome.

I think the two girls farthest away are both in s5, but closest is Faith who is in s6! She was the first student at Musana to introduce herself to me 😊.

I went to the primary school for another devotion at 3:00pm, and when I walked into one of the offices, they were shocked that I had arrived on time. Africans are so funny with their time-keeping. I met Proscovia, who works in HR, and she asked if I was the new intern. At this point, I just say "Yes" to avoid a lengthy explanation of why I'm at Musana.

That night, I read bedtime stories to Dezi and Joziah, and I wrote something in my notes that is too funny not to document. I don't remember how we got on this topic, but Dezi was upset with Andrea because she had given Damalie (18) the credit card to go shopping for something, but she wouldn't give it to Dezi (7) to buy something. "Not fair, mom" is what Dezi said with the most serious face and a whole lot of sass. Okay, Dez 😂.

  1. I love reading your posts, Abby. Your writing style is clear, straightforward, and relatable. Lots of chuckles throughout these blog entries, some because what you write is just plain funny (e.g., Dezi story above), but also because I think I can relate to your situation having spent time in Uganda with you (and the 22 years that preceded it :-) ). Blessings upon blessings.
