On Sunday (10/30), Haril, Andrea, Dezi, Joziah, and I went to church at the high school. The message was about joy and how it can be found in anything. Happiness cannot. Joy comes from the Lord, while happiness is a fleeting feeling. The pastor talked about how we have this peace that passes understanding and that it guards our hearts and minds because nothing can touch our salvation! We know our final destination. We sang Reckless Love and Oceans, which are both songs that I love. Because Haril is the director, he talked in front of all the students after the service. He told them to work hard and study hard and wished them good luck on their upcoming exams. He made sure to finish with telling them that no matter what happens on their exams, Jesus loves them and that is most important! He introduced me as a biologist and said to befriend me if they needed any help haha. As we were walking out, like five girls came up to me and gave me hugs. Some of them I had met previously like Faith, but the others I did not know. I met Dorothy, Elly, and Peter (Damalie's brother), who are all s6's. Susan told me that she didn't recognize me because I was wearing a dress. I laughed and agreed with her that I also did not recognize myself 😂. I gave Joziah a piggyback ride home!
Some of the s6 biology students had told me that they were having a practical after church, so I headed back over to the high school. As I was walking, I was a little worried that I should've maybe changed out of my dress and put on close-toed shoes. I also didn't have goggles or a hair tie to pull my hair back. When I got to the lab, I realized that I had nothing to worry about. Nobody was wearing goggles, gloves, or lab coats. Some people had open-toed shoes. Unlabeled solutions were sitting out and bunsen burners were left on and unattended. Nobody seemed worried about any of these things, so I decided not to be either 😂.
Above is Steven observing one of the students' solutions in a test tube. Below are George, Hasan, and Fahad (left to right), some of my besties.
Above is Grace, and I do not know the name of the student below.
I was walking around taking pictures and talking to the students when George decided that he would rather talk politics than do the dichotomous key that they were supposed to be doing 😂. I am not a super political person and really don't know a whole lot about government, but I answered the questions of his that I did know. We talked about how each president's term in America is four years, but they can get reelected once. Uganda's president has been ruling since 1986 😮! Fahad and I started talking biology and geography, and he drew me a map of Uganda. I asked Steven if the students had to wear goggles, gloves, or any special protective equipment. I did not want this question to sound like it was coming from a place of arrogance or privilege, but I was more so asking because I was genuinely curious and wondering about their safety. He said that it's kind of up to the parents, and they don't want to buy their kids lab coats or goggles.
After class, I walked over to the volleyball court and football field to watch the students play their games.
Four girls, Faith, Hope, Sami, and Sula came over and sat by me and asked me about America. I loved talking with them and exchanging questions about our cultures.
In preparing dinner, I helped make naan and Andrea made a chicken coconut curry. Super yummy! While we were all sitting at the table, Andrea suggested that we give our happy, crappy, silly, and scary of the day. We all went around the table and said what made us happy, what made us sad, something that we laughed at, and something that might have scared us during the day. Haril said that it was a cool way to reflect on the day, keep our emotions in check, and let others know how we are feeling. My silly for the day actually happened during dinner. I saw something move on the wall a few feet away from me, and when I looked up I barely had time to see that it was a little lizard because Max (the cat) had bolted out from under my chair and eaten it. I was shocked. It all happened so fast, and I didn't even know that Max was underneath me. That was my silly and I guess my scary as well.😂
